About our organization:

BEAM Education Foundation, located in Chiang Mai, Thailand, is currently seeking a Volunteer Social Studies Teacher for the Community Youth Leaders Development (CYLD) Program under the Compulsory Education Program.

Founded in 2010, BEAM Education Foundation is a non-profit charity educational organization providing educational services to marginalized and migrant youth in Thailand and Myanmar. We deliver educational access, vocational skills training, and youth leadership empowerment opportunities to meet the specific needs of our program beneficiaries. In the past 14 years, BEAM has empowered community youth leaders while promoting and widening access to basic, higher, and vocational education.

 

Purpose of the position:

So far, BEAM has supported over 100,000 disadvantaged youth and children through our various programs. BEAM operates over 30 sub-projects under 6 main programs. The Volunteer Social Studies Teacher is responsible for teaching the student, managing the class, creating lesson plans, and grading exams. The Volunteer Social Studies Teacher reports to the Compulsory Education Program coordinator and is responsible for teaching students social studies skills and knowledge equivalent to upper secondary level and contributing to achieving the Foundation’s ultimate goals.

We are looking for an ambitious volunteer teacher with a community mindset, enthusiasm for helping others, and a desire to engage holistically in organizational development.

 

Job description:

The Volunteer Social Studies Teacher is required to carry out the following functions, in addition to other associated functions as the Foundation may require from time to time:

  • Responsibility for teaching students social studies skills and knowledge equivalent to upper secondary level. GED Social Studies 2014 curriculum, 4 lessons per week (6 hours total)
  • Managing the classroom.
  • Creating lesson plans for the class.
  • Creating, proctoring, and grading semester exams.
  • Attending regular teaching-oriented meetings that are organized by the program coordinator or Management Board.
  • Promoting actions/behaviors that respect students’ dignity and diverse religions, cultures, and customs.
  • Participating in school welfare activities, occasional workshops, taking part in student support, and reviewing and developing the curriculum as needed.
  • Complying with foundation regulations and operation manual.
  • Providing academic feedback and assisting with university applications, writing recommendation letters for students if requested.

 

Job Skills and Qualifications:

  • University graduate with a Social Studies related major or relevant certificate.
  • English language skills are required and prior teaching experience is desirable. Native speakers with the GED and American education experiences are preferable.
  • Excellent knowledge of designated subjects and the latest education theories & practices.
  • Passion for teaching and organization skills.
  • Commitment to helping students achieve their maximum potential.
  • Strong organization, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills: flexibility, patience, and positive attitude.
  • Knowledge of understanding and practicing Safeguarding Children and Young People is preferable.   • The candidate should also be volunteer-minded and commit to about 15 working hours per week.
