The ICRC Regional Delegation in Bangkok seeks to fill the following position:
Communications Officer, based in Bangkok
We are seeking a motivated team player with a positive, can-do attitude to join our dynamic team.
The ICRC Bangkok Regional Communication Centre (RCC) is seeking a dedicated, well qualified team player to support the implementation of ICRC’s regional public communication efforts in the Asia-Pacific region. The Communications Officer is the regional focal point for public communication activities in support of the ICRC’s efforts in positioning itself to increase acceptance of its mission, objectives, and operations in the Region.
S/he will reinforce and enhance relationships with journalists and other influencers across the Asia-Pacific markets with a view to profiling the ICRC mandate, humanitarian concerns and operations. S/he promotes ICRC messages on institutional priorities and operational activities and concerns.
With the regional teams, s/he manages media queries, interviews, and other public-facing engagement opportunities, advising teams in the Region on public communication issues, opportunities, challenges and contributes to implementing public engagement and digital strategies.
ACCOUNTABILITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides information to media on the ICRC's operations and humanitarian concerns particularly on issues relevant to/in the Asia-Pacific Region.
- Builds relations with regional and global media based in Bangkok and within the Asia-Pacific Region.
- Supports delegations in the Asia-Pacific Region in building and reinforcing their media networks and other related capacity building activities.
- Supports the drafting of news releases, reactive lines and other products for media and pitches story ideas, content and interviews.
- In consultation with the Bangkok RCC Manager, build proactive strategies, identify information gaps or data deficits, and assist in producing responsive content to prebunk harmful narratives and manage misinformation, disinformation, and hate speech (MDH).
- Work with colleagues from other departments including REM and RRN to identify relevant and timely angles for media interests on ICRC work.
GENERAL DUTIES
- Understands and adheres to the seven Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement
- Understands and adheres to the ICRC Code of Conduct
- Understands the roles of the components of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement
- Respects and observes staff regulations and security rules at all times
- Develops and maintains a conducive working environment with colleagues and line managers
- May be asked to perform tasks not covered in this job description and to provide support to other departments as necessary
YOUR PROFILE:
- University degree in a relevant discipline such as journalism, communication management, public relations, or political science.
- Computer skills and familiarity with digital communication tools.
- Minimum 5 years of direct work experience in media, media relations and content generation.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English. Good command of other Asian languages an asset.
- Excellent public communication skills and in-depth knowledge of the media environment in the Asia-Pacific Region.
- Ability to travel up to 15 per cent of the year.
- Strongly motivated by humanitarian work
- Ability to respond and adhere to tight deadlines with minimum supervision and unforeseen humanitarian emergencies
