Job Title: Campaigner, Plastics Campaign

Type of appointment: Fixed-term

Remuneration: 50,000-70,000 baht per month, depending on experience

Duration of contract: 12 months (potentially renewable or convertible to a permanent position, subject to performance review)

Location: Bangkok based with opportunity to travel often.

The Role

EJF is seeking a dynamic and dedicated Campaigner to join our Plastics Campaign team. This position focuses on addressing plastic pollution from a life cycle perspective, with a particular emphasis on advocating This role directly supports EJF 's ocean protection campaign by advocating for improved downstream management and policies related to recycling, waste-to-energy initiatives, and the elimination of landfills, open waste burnings, and illegal dumpings and waste trades which contribute to marine pollution. A key focus will be tackling Abandoned, Lost, or Otherwise Discarded Fishing Gear (ALDFG), one of the major sources of plastic pollution and the inclusion of frontline communities in policy-making processes.

The successful candidate will lead initiatives that aim to prevent plastics from entering marine ecosystems, thereby protecting marine life and supporting sustainable community-driven solutions for ocean conservation.

 

Key Responsibilities

Advocacy and Policy Engagement:

    • Lead efforts to advocate for robust waste management policies, including improved recycling systems and strategies to eliminate landfills and open burnings aimed at preventing plastic waste from entering the ocean.
    • Engage with government agencies, policymakers, and other stakeholders to promote real and sustainable solutions for essential plastics.
    • Drive policy discussions on the management of essential plastics including ALDFG and ensure its inclusion in broader plastic waste management frameworks and regulations.
    • Advocate for the inclusion of frontline communities in policy-making.

Community Engagement:

    • Work closely with project coordinators and relevant staff and community leaders to bring communities to the forefront of the campaign, ensuring their voices are included in policy-making processes.
    • Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with community leaders, civil society organizations, and grassroots partners to foster real solutions and collective action against plastic pollution.

Campaign Strategy and Implementation:

    • Develop and execute impactful campaign strategies to address plastic pollution from a life cycle perspective with a focus on downstream measures.
    • Organise events, workshops, and outreach activities to raise awareness about plastic pollution and its real solutions.

Research and Reporting:

    • Conduct research on best practices for downstream plastic management, ALDFG solutions, and waste-to-energy innovations in collaboration with the Plastics Researcher.
    • Produce reports, policy briefs, and campaign materials to inform stakeholders and the public.
    • Assist in monitoring the effectiveness of the campaign, tracking KPIs and evaluating outcomes.

Communications and Outreach:

    • Work with EJF’s communications team to create compelling content for social media, press releases, and other communication channels.
    • Represent EJF at conferences, workshops, and policy forums.

 

Qualifications and Experience

  • Thai national only
  • A minimum of 3-year experience in environmental advocacy, policy work, or a related field.
  • Strong understanding of plastic pollution issues, particularly downstream management and ALDFG.
  • Proven experience in engaging with policymakers, government agencies, and community stakeholders.
  • Excellent communication and public speaking skills in both English and Thai.
  • Ability to conduct thorough research and produce high-quality written materials.
  • Strong project management skills, including the ability to plan, organise, and execute campaigns effectively.
  • Passion for environmental justice and commitment to EJF’s mission.
