Local Consultant – Wildlife Monitoring and Data Analysis

Background

Northern Thailand’s Doi Phu Kha and Mae Cha Rim National Parks, along with the Phu Fah Non-Hunting Area, are biodiversity strongholds home to threatened species, including key mammal and predator populations. They are part of the broader Doi Phu Kha Transboundary Conservation Project, which aims to strengthen wildlife monitoring, promote knowledge sharing, and guide evidence-based management in collaboration with local and transboundary partners.

Purpose of the Assignment

The consultant will lead and support wildlife monitoring, conduct research fieldwork, manage wildlife databases, and analyse monitoring data to inform conservation decision-making. The role also includes coordinating with key project partners to organise meetings and workshops for sharing and learning from project findings, as well as supporting knowledge exchange between Doi Phu Kha, Mae Cha Rim, and Phu Fah Non-Hunting Area teams.

Key Responsibilities

• Plan, survey, and monitor mammal, predator, and other key wildlife species using camera traps and other scientific methods in line with recognised ecological principles.
• Compile, manage, and analyse wildlife monitoring data, producing technical reports and visual outputs to guide management decisions.
• Support database creation and maintenance for long-term wildlife monitoring.
• Coordinate project implementation with partner organisations, DNP park authorities, and WWF staff.
• Organise and facilitate stakeholder meetings/workshops to share project results and lessons learned.
• Prepare presentations, and technical documents for internal and external audiences.
• Undertake other duties as identified in line with project needs.

Expected Results

• High-quality, standardized monitoring data for priority species in the target areas.
• Assist and support DNP staff in wildlife monitoring, database management, and data analysis.
• Strengthened collaboration between Doi Phu Kha, Mae Cha Rim, and Phu Fah Non-Hunting Area teams.
• Effective dissemination of project results through targeted meetings and workshops.
• Clear, actionable recommendations for biodiversity conservation and adaptive management.

Duration and Effort

The consultancy runs for nine months (1 October 2025 – 30 June 2026). The consultant is expected to spend extended periods (7–10 days per month) in remote forest areas for fieldwork.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in forestry, wildlife management, ecology, or related field.
• Experience in wildlife monitoring, ecological research, or collaborative conservation projects.
• Proficiency in SMART Patrol, camera trap deployment, and biodiversity data analysis.
• Good physical fitness for extended field missions in challenging terrain.
• Strong facilitation skills for organising and delivering training, workshops, and partner meetings.
• Thai national or legally eligible to work in Thailand; fluency in Thai required, English an asset.
• No gender preference; age between 21–60 years.

Management and Reporting

The consultant will report directly to Rattaphon Pitakthepsombat at WWF-Thailand.
Deliverables include monthly work reports, photos documenting activities, and agreed technical outputs.
