Position Title: Project Officer – DPKY Tiger Recovery Project
Division/Department: Conservation
Reporting to: Conservation Programme Manager
Base Location: Bangkok, Dong Phayayen – Khao Yai Forest Complex
Background and Purposes:
Thailand can play a critical role in global tiger recovery efforts. There are an estimated 3890 wild tigers in the world. The Global Tiger Recovery Program (Tx2) is hoping to increase that number to 6000 by the year 2022. More than 60% of the world’s tigers are found in India. In mainland SE Asia, Thailand is the best hope for tiger recovery.
Most of Thailand’s tigers are found in the Western Forest Complex (WEFCOM) in Huai Kha Khaeng, Thung Yai East, and Thung Yai West Wildlife Sanctuaries and in Mae Wong and Khlong Lan National Parks.
The other highest priority for tiger recovery in Thailand is the Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai Forest Complex (DPKY). Home to more than 800 species of fauna and located in northeast Thailand, DPKY covers 6150 km2 and comprises five almost contiguous Protected Areas; Khao Yai National Park, Thap Lan National Park, Pang Sida National Park, Ta Phraya National Park, and Dong Yai Wildlife Sanctuary. The complex spans 230 kilometers from Ta Phraya National Park on the Cambodian border in the east and Khao Yai National Park at the western end of the complex.
On World Tiger Day (July 29) the Department of National Parks (DNP) and the Khao Yai Foundation announced that they had developed a 10-yr plan to restore tigers to Khao Yai National Park and to recover tigers in the whole DPKY complex. They invited WWF to be part of this effort.
