Job Summary:

As Regional Actions Campaigner you are a member of the Greenpeace Southeast Asia Public Engagement, Actions and Investigations (PEAI) Unit. The unit is primarily responsible for developing the capacity for and quality of Non-Violent Direct Actions (NVDA), Investigations and stronger Offline Engagement in projects across the region and contributing to the development of aligned engagement strategies in line with Programme priorities. The Regional Actions Campaigner will work closely with Programme and project leaders and the GPSEA actions community to ensure high quality strategic input and the availability and the development of needed NVDA capacities.

The Regional Action Campaigner is committed to non-violent direct actions and activism in general as a means of affecting change. You have solid knowledge and a proven track record in project management, campaigning, field logistics, direct action design, planning and delivery. You have experience in capacity development and have developed and delivered trainings in the realms of actions and creative campaigning. You have experience in managing and engaging with Actions related communities of practice, can engage and motivate people and deal with conflicts.

You should be equally comfortable in a warehouse as you are in meeting rooms and negotiations.  As an experienced campaigner you can help develop objectives and appropriate tactics based on campaign strategies. You are a solution-oriented creative thinker, have strong communications skills and experience working in intercultural contexts, all of which will help you in strengthening and promoting activism and people engagement as a core campaigning approach throughout projects and Programme in Southeast Asia 

This is a full-time position ideally based in one of our offices in Southeast Asia, Jakarta, Bangkok, Manila or Kuala Lumpur. The position requires extensive travel across SEA, and maybe required to work outside of the home base for extended periods on projects.

Key Duties

  1. Action-led Campaigning
  • Serve as a liaison between the PEAI team and other Programme disciplines for ongoing development and coordination of non-violent direct actions and field events that support campaign strategies and objectives.
  • Keep track and engage in relevant discussions about core issues such as risk appetite and smart risk taking, key campaigning concepts and people power throughout GPSEA.
  • Support projects in all phases of the project with special regards to appropriate target selection, development of relevant tactics
  • Proactively scan projects for creative action and engagement opportunities
  • Facilitate and support team processes in the development of creative and bold action ideas, including the input from creative thinkers inside and outside the organization.
  • Participate in the Integrated Campaign planning process as an PEAI Team representative
  • Closely liaise with Action coordinators in projects on processes and appropriate support and training.
  1. GPSEA Actions Community
  • Closely engage with the GPSEA Actions Community and facilitate community processes and meetings.
  • Strengthen our capacities through active coordination and skillsharing between teams.
  • Facilitate a culture of learning together, within the diversity of our region.
  • Provide input into the development of activist and volunteer pathways and explore opportunities to widen our Actions community.
  • Ensure and facilitate the connection between the regional and the international Actions Community
  1. Capacity building and development
  • In coordination with national Action Managers, develop and put in place a regional Action Capacity development plan, in line with regional Programme priorities.
  • Together oversee and input into the development of action relevant skills throughout the region such as logistical skills, tactical knowledge, action design, investigation and campaign integration.
  • Ensure the implementation of relevant Best Practices, health and safety policies, other guidelines and new concepts through appropriate tools and methods.
  • Provide input into the development and implementation of the various activist training programs and as needed, act as a trainer, especially in one’s field of expertise.
  • Ensure that lessons are learnt, through proper debriefs and evaluation, and contribute to their future application.
  1. Other duties as directed
  • Contribution and eventual participation in Greenpeace projects outside of the region.
  • On occasion, represent Greenpeace to the media, authorities, allies or opponents.
  • On occasion, get your hands dirty and coordinate an activity in the field.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned by the Regional Actions Manager.
  • Manage project budgets.

Educational Background & Fundamental Qualifications 

Level of Education:      Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent industry experience

Work Experience:         Action and Logistics Coordinator 3-5 years,

Work in a campaigning organisation, 3-5 years

Desirable Qualities and Skills:

  • Experience as a trainer in one or more of; boat driving, climbing, NVDA, wilderness first aid, hazmat, security.
  • Experience working with ships or other vessels
  • Experience working as a Campaigner
  • Experience working within a complex organization

This position requires the employee to have a flexible approach and the ability to adapt and work in different and challenging work and cultural environments, which may include flexible arrangements working in challenging field and frontline work environments.

WORKING HOURS

Normal hours of work for full time Employee will be forty (40) per week or (5) days in a week, at 8 hours per day excluding an hour lunch break. This will be from Monday to Friday, between the hours of 8:30 am to 6: 30 pm. Ordinary hours of work may be varied as agreed between staff and the line managers.

LEAVE

A permanent employee will be entitled to the following leaves:

Annual Leave: 20 days

Parental Leave:  As per labor laws and Greenpeace policy

Long Service Leave: 2 months paid leave after 5 years of continuous service

Compassionate leave: maximum of 5 days for the death of significant others

SALARY

In determining salary offer for this position, Greenpeace applies its Salary Grading Process, taking into consideration the job description and applicant’s previous experience, and the organization’s salary grade.
