Job Vacancy: Policy Advocacy and Communication Officer


Asylum Access is an innovative non-profit founded to make refugee rights a reality for refugees. Asylum Access envisions a world in which refugees live safely, move freely, attend school, work and rebuild their lives. Asylum Access believes that when refugees enjoy their human rights they can access effective, lasting solutions.

We build transformative rights-based approaches to refugee response. These rights-based approaches include policy advocacy, strategic litigation, legal services, and community legal empowerment programs. We deploy these approaches in our three countries of operation: Thailand, Malaysia, and Mexico.


Position based in Bangkok, Thailand .

Duration: 1 year contract

Reporting: Report directly to the AAT Country Director for all work responsibilities and professional development


Policy Advocacy and Communication Officer Position Responsibilities


Policy Advocacy Duties - 70%

  • Assist the Country Director in the implementation of policy advocacy strategy of AAT
  • Develop a through written strategy for influencing key decision-makers and building partnerships that can create positive changes in laws and policies that affect refugees rights  
  • Building relationship with stakeholders and advocacy targets in the Government.  Engaging the Thai government in a way that leads to actual change within measurable time horizon
  • Develop and maintain constructive relationships with key governmental, intergovernmental and nongovernmental players in Thailand
  • Participate in local and regional networks meetings to ensure the strengthening of AAT Policy Advocacy Plan
  • Identify and assess a variety of ways to achieve changes in legislation, policy, and practice
  • Drafting, reviewing and editing reports, submissions and recommendations for national and international human rights processes, op-eds, articles and other documents related to policy advocacy
  • Assist in the update and monitoring of the annual plan of AAT and up to date policy advocacy database
  • Undertaking other responsibilities related to policy advocacy as assigned by the Country Director

 

Communications duties - 30%

  • Draft AAT periodic reports, newsletters and other information materials for internal records to ensure compliance with organizational monitoring and evaluation standards and for sharing with funders, partners and the public
  • Maintain AAT’s social media accounts
  • Oversee the collection and storage of information about our work in the form of success stories, photos, quotes by clients, partners and other stakeholders for use in AAT advocacy work, reporting and general communication
  • Undertake other responsibilities related to communications as assigned by the Country Director


Skills and Experience Required:

  • A degree in law or public policy or international studies or human rights or refugee rights
  • Details knowledge of the working of Thailand government institutes and current political climate.  Knowledge of, and experience on regional and international human rights mechanism is a plus
  • Proven ability to take initiative and ownership of projects, manage multiple deadlines, and work effectively with a high attention to detail
  • A positive and outgoing attitude with ability to work well in a diverse and multicultural office
  • Strong understand of refugee rights and knowledge of policy issues related to migration
  • Have good relationship with government, local organizations is a plus
  • The ability to travel, to work to tight deadlines, and participate meetings on weekend or after working time
  • Developing communication materials and strong presentation skills
  • Honest and transparent
  • Basic working knowledge of Gmail, Google Drive, MS Office and related tools (Docs, Sheets, etc.)

 

Salary and Benefit

Asylum Access Thailand offers a salary package range between 34,000 - 36,000 Baht/month plus health insurance and 20 days annual leave.
