Introduction
The Shoklo Malaria Research Unit (SMRU) is a field station attached to the Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand. It is part of the Mahidol Oxford Research Unit (MORU) which is a collaborative effort between Mahidol and Oxford Universities, and is part-funded by a UK charity, the Wellcome Trust. SMRU’s aims are to i) treat and care for patients with malaria, ii) undertake research into malaria in this area in order to determine the best methods of prevention and treatment, and iii) to advise on the treatment and the control of malaria in the South East Asia region and more widely.

Shoklo Malaria Research Unit has a laboratory position available for enthusiastic persons interested in entomology research. We are seeking for full time technicians to work on mosquito vector-borne diseases. The post-holders will be involved in the epidemiological studies involving malaria vector.

Report to: Senior Entomologist

Staff under supervision: Molecular entomology team (2 peoples)

Task and Responsibilities

 The person selected for this job will be in charge of all activities related to the processing of entomological samples in molecular biology. On a daily basis, this person will be involved in project management and experiments:

1. Management and supervision:
1. supervise molecular/identification team and coordinate activities;
2. procurement of lab supplies and maintenance of the equipment;
3. sample storage and inventory;
4. data management: recording, analysis, entry and reporting of the data;
5. development and writing of SOPs.
2. Perform routine analysis and participate to assay development for :
1. DNA extraction including buffer preparation, reagents aliquoting, control of the DNA extraction using a biophotometer, pooling and dilution of the DNA extracts, cleaning DNA extraction room;
2. PCR including reagent aliquoting, master mix preparation, using thermocycler, gel electrophoresis, preparing samples for DNA sequencing;
3. qPCR: including reagent aliquoting, master mix preparation, use of a real-time thermocycler.

Essential Criteria

• Bachelor Degree in Medical Technology or equivalent
• Ability to supervise people and coordinate activities
• Previous experience in molecular biology
• Excellent communication skills including fluent in English and Thai
• Computing skill
• Willingness to live in Mae Sot
• Willingness to learn different techniques
• Ability to work as part of multinational team
• Ability to work flexible hours including weekends
• Able to work under pressure

Desirable Criteria

• Karen and Burmese is an asset
• Previous mosquito experience
• Experience in research
