Eyes on the Forest Project Manager

Division/Department:   Conservation

Reporting to:     Conservation Director

Effective Date: 01-June-19

Base Location:   WWF Thailand office, Bangkok, Thailand

Background and Purposes:

The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) aims to conserve nature and ecological processes by preserving biodiversity, ensuring sustainable use of natural resources and promoting the reduction of pollution and wasteful use of resources and energy. WWF works in more than 100 countries around the world. WWF has been working in Thailand since 1983 and WWF-Thailand was founded in 1995. WWF-Thailand implements a strategy that harnesses the strengths of the WWF network to focus on six major goals - freshwater, wildlife, oceans, climate & energy, forests, and food – and three key drivers of environmental problems – markets, finance and governance. In support of this strategy WWF-Thailand works with government, business, civil society and individuals to achieve our global goals for the benefit of the people of Thailand and the world. The Project Manager will be responsible for implementing the Eyes on the Forest (EoF) Project which aims to reduce deforestation in the Dawna Tenasserim area. The Project Manager will work closely with the Forest Practice Coordinator and the Director of Conservation.

Major Role Responsibilities

  1. Work with the Greater Mekong Forest Hub to develop a methodology using remote sensing and ground truthing to accurately monitor deforestation in the Dawna Tenasserim.
  2. Identify and assess deforestation drivers in the Dawna Tenasserim.
  3. Work with government agencies, NGOs, the private sector, CSOS, and the WWF Network to reduce illegal deforestation (as defined by the newly revised Forest Law) in the Dawna Tenasserim. Organize regular meetings with these partners to monitor progress and develop a strategy to reduce the drivers of deforestation.
  4. Intelligence from EoF will be used to achieve the 0.7 % deforestation rate targets written in the WWF GMP Forest Strategy as well as Thailand’s critical contribution to keep deforestation rates below 0.4% in the Thai DTL.
  5. Develop work plan and budget for each year of the project.
  6. Write and submit all required reports, e.g., TPRs, M&E reports, and others.
  7. Oversee and manage a consultant to conduct an assessment of rubber supply chains in PAs in southern Thailand, with a focus on identifying illegal rubber supply chains. This should be done in close consultation with the PAs and with the mutual aim to reduce deforestation in PAs.
