Background information
The Vulnerability, Assessment and Mapping (VAM) unit for Asia & Pacific, the Food Security Analysis Service of WFP in the region, has an integral role to play in ensuring that WFP’s response and technical assistance efforts are founded on a strong evidence base. As part of an ongoing regional effort, VAM is committed to developing a research agenda that will strengthen the understanding of vulnerability and risks in the region, in particular linked to climate change, natural hazards and conflicts.
In this process, WFP aims to get a more granular understanding of households, communities and food systems as they relate to vulnerability and resilience to a particular natural hazard in a particular country in the region. WFP aims to do so by collaborating with institutions working around the same body of work and by developing studies and analysis from new, innovative perspectives to enhance learning and knowledge. It also aims to further the development of measurement framework in order to allow to measure and quantify overtime vulnerability and severity to natural hazards through innovative, cost effective data collection tools.
This work will further contribute to WFP’s work in the region building country-led, country-owned, fully integrated platform for real-time food security and disaster impact monitoring (PRISM), and help identify and integrate additional vulnerability layers into PRISM.
It is envisioned that the Programme Policy Officer (NOA) will provide research and analytical support on issues related to food security, market and climate analysis; undertake research and data collection on risk and vulnerability in the context of climate change and natural hazards, including in urban areas; support the development/refinement of measurement framework, tools and methodologies and; look into the nexus between food insecurity, migration, climate and markets.
