Introduction
The Shoklo Malaria Research Unit (SMRU) is a field station attached to the Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand. It is part of the Mahidol Oxford Research Unit (MORU) which is a collaborative effort between Mahidol and Oxford Universities, and is part-funded by a UK charity, the Wellcome Trust. SMRU’s aims are to i) treat and care for patients with malaria, ii) undertake research into malaria in this area in order to determine the best methods of prevention and treatment, and iii) to advise on the treatment and the control of malaria in the South East Asia region and more widely.

Report to:  Research Assistant

Staff under supervision:  Molecular lab and sorting

Task and Responsibilities:

The person selected for this job will be in charge of all activities related to the processing of entomological samples in molecular biology. On a daily basis, this person will be involved in project management and laboratory bench work:

1. Management and supervision
   1. supervise molecular team and coordinate activities
   2. procurement of lab supplies and maintenance of the equipment
   3. sample storage and inventory
   4. data management: recording, analysis, entry and reporting of the data
   5. quality insurance: development and writing of SOPs
2. Perform routine and research analysis:
   1. DNA extraction including buffer preparation, reagents aliquoting, control of the DNA extraction using a biophotometer, pooling and dilution of the DNA extracts, cleaning DNA extraction room
   2. PCR including reagent aliquoting, master mix preparation, using thermocycler, gel electrophoresis, preparing samples for DNA sequencing
   3. qPCR: including reagent aliquoting, master mix preparation, use of a real-time Thermocycler
   4. Carry out research experiments involving molecular biology assays

Position requirements:

Essential Criteria

• Bachelor Degree in Biology or equivalent
• Ability to supervise people and coordinate activities
• Previous experience in molecular biology
• Excellent communication skills including fluent in English and Thai
• Computing skill
• Willingness to live in Mae Sot
• Willingness to learn different techniques
• Ability to work as part of multinational team
• Ability to work flexible hours including weekends
• Able to work under pressure

Desirable Criteria

• Karen and Burmese is an asset
• Previous mosquito experience
• Experience in research
